The World’s Best Shops is the second book from Courier, published by Gestalten in 2022.
Working closely with the Courier team, I art directed the project. Building on the success of their first title — Work Better, Live Smarter, Be Happier — the brief was to work with the same physical format but bring a fresh look and feel to the new book.
I was inspired by the aesthetic of traditional corner shops and this informed a design language of playful ‘stickers’. Gill Ultra Bold was chosen as the display typeface, a nod to retro shop signage, adding a unique flavour to the book whilst working harmoniously with the existing Courier brand.
The 288-page book is split into three sections: photographic documentary of 15 of the world’s best shops, a glossy still-life product shoot, and a detailed how-to guide for retail entrepreneurs.
