This series is a love letter to Japan; one I hope will be the first of many. The photographs were made in late 2019 as I explored Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka for the first time. I was obsessed with the Japanese metropolis before I visited, on arrival this fixation only deepened.
The work aims to reflect the excitement I felt growing up, dreaming of Tokyo from the other side of the world. Looking back at the images now (particularly since the pandemic), my time there feels like a dream, the neon-drenched streets look too perfect. I think of the images as something ‘hyper-real’, a blend of fiction and reality that is impossible to separate.
My Japan Nights series is available to buy as a limited-edition 24-page book.
The series was exhibited at Gareth Gardner Gallery in September 2021.
